5 Tips to Keep Your Dog Healthy

Diet

While you might think that all dog food is created equal, you’d be incorrect. Not only are there massive differences between ingredients and formulas, different breeds have dietary restrictions suited to their specific needs. What you feed your dog affects everything about their health — including their weight, dental health, and health of their fur to name a few — so it’s not something to take lightly. Avoid feeding your pup ‘human’ food, even if they are giving you that look that’s so hard to deny. If possible, choose a raw food diet to give your dog a nutritious and well-balanced diet. If you do choose commercial pet food, always choose an option that is upfront about the ingredients and doesn’t include a bunch of preservatives.

Exercise

Physical activity is just as important for your dog as it is for you. When it is combined with a good diet, exercise is incredibly important to extend your dog’s life and keep them happy. Taking your pup for a walk won’t just be good for them, it’ll be beneficial to your own health as well. Grab that leash and give them that look that lets them know it’s time for walkies!

Get to Know Your Vet

For many people, their dog is like a child to them. Just like with a kid, you wouldn’t want to send them to an unknown doctor — it’s scary! This makes it important that you find a vet that you trust and gets along with your dog early in their age. Keeping a regular appointment schedule will help your dog be more comfortable with the doctor in charge of their health and well-being.

Pay Attention

It can be tough to know exactly what’s going on in your dog’s head. Without being able to talk, communication is next to impossible. However, you can gain a lot of insight into what your dog is feeling based on their actions. Do they seem tired all of the time? Are they always panting? Do they not play as much as they used to? These are all signs to keep an eye on to know if there is something wrong.

Engage Them

Dogs love to be mentally stimulated. Give them a chance to think by playing with them, teaching them tricks and commands, and other new activities. When you do this, your dog’s mind will be more agile and alert, even as they age.
